Finally got around to writing a song for my wife. 42 years married, although she says the math doesn't work, since (she claims) she's only 39 years old. Always thought it would be a mushy love song, but I couldn't find the mushy inside my brain (despite all the mush in there), so this is where I ended up. Was sort of going for a grab your instruments and head out to the porch kind of thing here. My daughter Julia sings the harmonies with me. Great tip I got from this forum.....always had trouble getting a full, upfront sound from acoustic guitar, despite mic placement, but some here suggested panning left, right & middle with different guitar parts for a stereo effect, and result was a huge improvement (for me). The random chatter at start & end will be removed before I make it public on Soundcloud - just me experimenting. Any comments on the music greatly appreciated - criticism especially welcome, since the Soundcloud folks are mostly too nice. Thanks to all.
That's a nice song stinger. I've got to believe you're a Willie Nelson fan, as this song reminds me so much of his slow stuff. It's great that you're doing it with your daughter. This is something to save to remind you and you family of the time you are spending together far in the future. Set do keep all of the chatter. I agree with the idea of making the harmony vocal a little more even in volume. Sometimes it drops out when I think it should go on. I can't tell if she stops singing or if her part is just buried in the mix. By the way, I have a twisted pair of vines pretty much like those in your photo that my dad cut and made into a decorative piece years ago. They are indeed permanently bonded. T
Like some others mentioned, the stuff at the start is a keeper. It adds to rather than detracts from, so my ears were listening when the music finally came in. Great song, and vocals.
Thanks for listening & commenting, Martin. The mic I used is a Shure MV 57 - just sits on a tabletop, so my guitar strings were maybe 8-10 inches away. But I think the panning may have helped more than anything. It's basically three guitars - one doing the main pick & strum melody, a 2nd strumming the same chords without the picking, and a 3rd doing the picking part without the accompanying strumming. But it really began to feel more "live" when I panned part 1 all right, part 3 all left, and part 2 more or less center. Thanks again for listening.
Love the recording and the song, both created with a pure and natural feel...not to mention the family atmosphere. Please continue to create, record and keep us posted. Very nicely done!!
